Increasing oil prices and the knock on effect to aviation fuel has led Qantas, the Australian airline, to ground some of its planes. A review of its international flight routes is currently underway and announcements will be made next week on the extent of the cuts. Domestic routes are also likely to be affected but these will be a few months away. Increasing fuel costs and route cutting will inevitably impact on jobs and redundancies are also expected to be announced.
Only earlier this week American Airlines decided to delay its proposed expansion of routes to the China due to fuel costs. It has to be only a matter of time before UK carriers take the same, tough decision.

Eos, the airline that offered only business class flights has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The carrier that operated between London and New York was established on the back of increasing demand for business class travel across the pond. However with increasing operating costs, namely fuel prices, and the impact of the credit crunch it had become increasingly difficult to operate profitably. Taking on Virgin Atlantic and British Airways was never going to be easy and other premium carriers such as Silverjet will hope they do no go the same way.

JD Wetherspoons (JDW) slumped by 51.75p to 260p on the news that it had been hit hard by the smoking ban and did not expect a speedy recovery from the downturn. Despite customers preferring the no smoking atmostphere, smokers are choosing to spend less time in the pubs, therefore drinking less.
Whilst turnover was up 0.4%, pre-tax profits fell 13% to £28.5m for the first half of the year. Second half results are expected to be broadly in line with the first half. Despite the news, the interim dividend was increased by 10% to 4.4p.
