Centrica, the owner of British Gas, has signalled that utility bills could be on the increase again following increasing costs in the wholesale energy market. The wholesale cost of electricity has doubled since last year, while gas has risen some 92% over the same period. (more…)

EDF, the French utility giant, has made an offer for British Energy as part of the bidding process for which the deadline was yesterday. EDF’s proposal was tabled on Friday morning, although the offer price has not been disclosed. (more…)

Drax, the coal-fired power station company, is looking to reduce the risk of the price rises affecting coal by diversifying in to gas-fired power stations. Drax has considered several opportunities to date but so far nothing has caught the eye and warranted a bid. The purchase of a gas-fired station would be dependant on value as previous potential targets have been seen as too expensive.

British Energy, the nuclear generator, is proving to be a popular takeover target or partner as it courts five potential suitors. Centrica, EDF, RWE, Eon and Iberdrola are all taking an interest in British Energy as the UK Government looks to relieve itself of its 35% stake in the company. (more…)
