 The process where a mutual organisation such as a bulding society becomes a public listed company. Organisations that demutualise offer windfalls to members in the form of cash or shares in the newly listed company.

    • Share Account
      A Building Society account that gave the account holder membership of the organisation. Such a share allows the member to vote at the AGM. However in the 1990's many accounts were opened by 'carpetbaggers' solely for the intention of receiving a windfall when the Building Society demutualised.
