Retail Sales up again in Feb March 20th, 2008

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released figures that show retail sales rose by 1% from January and by 5.5% from this time last year. The unexpected increase was attributable to higher food sales during the month.

The figures support the Bank of England’s (BoE) decision to keep interest rates on hold and that the threat of rising inflation is not going away. It also raises the question as to whether the man on the street is concerned about the credit crunch or whether it’s merely something that the boys and girls in The City get excited about.

    • New Highs and Lows
As the name suggests, the new highs and lows list shows stocks whose share price has reached either a new high or new low. The list can help pinpoint shares that are performing better or worse than their peers in the same sector. Viewed over a period of time, some stocks will consistently appear in one side of the list. Compare the shares performance to companies in the same sector and also to the sector average itself to identify potential over or under performers, particularly if the sector trend is moving in the opposite direction.
